Abstract

This study focuses on the closures of basic education schools during the Covid-19 pandemic. The hypothesis – which is confirmed throughout the paper – is that school closures in the basic education level in Brazil, during the Covid-19 pandemic, considering its lengthy duration, violated children’s rights. In this regard, at least since the second half of 2020, scientific evidence and recommendations from recognized organizations against school closures were available, while these were the grounds set by Brazilian law and Supreme Court to control public decisions and acts related to the Covid-19 pandemic. This study makes use of legislation, court cases, scientific studies, news and publications from recognized entities to ground its conclusions.
